Civil legal aid is an essential part of America's promise of equal justice for all. Ensuring equal access to legal assistance is important to all members of our community, not just those in desperate need. Our clients are among the most vulnerable in our community – women seeking protection from abuse, children seeking equal educational opportunities, families facing unlawful evictions or foreclosures that could leave them homeless, and senior citizens, veterans, and others trying to obtain federal benefits for which they qualify.

While Toledo has contracted, its Latino community has grown, making it a larger and more integral part of the city each year.
The University of Toledo will host the 25th Diamante Awards at 6 p.m. today at Premier Banquet Hall, 4480 Heatherdowns Blvd. The event was created to highlight and celebrate the accomplishments of Latinos in northwest Ohio.

Lead poisoning is a very serious public health problem in Toledo.
The City of Toledo has one of the highest rates of childhood lead poisoning in Ohio, ranking second highest to Cleveland for the percentage of children with confirmed elevated blood lead levels in 2012. The dangers posed by lead poisoning for children fall disproportionately on Toledo's low-income and African American populations. The enactment of the proposed Lead Ordinance is a matter of environmental and racial justice.
Our community has an opportunity to take action to significantly reduce the number of children who are being exposed to lead by adopting an ordinance that will require Lead Safe Residential Rental Property. Please consider attending a discussion on the steps necessary to significantly reduce lead poisoning in the City of Toledo.
Legal help shrinking for those in poverty

David Clay was just beginning his adult life when he was named in a lawsuit along with his former employer and co-workers.He thought the problem, which surrounded a sexual harassment claim, had been cleared up when he was 16.
"(My former employer's) lawyer wouldn't represent me. I was only 18 at the time and didn't have a lot of money. ... At that moment, I felt sunk, like I was at the mercy of a high-powered lawyer," Clay said.
Clay looked into the plaintiff's attorney and discovered he recently had won a case where there was a large payout. Someone mentioned legal aid and Clay, who was living in Columbus at the time, qualified for free representation.
