#GivingTuesday

On Tuesday, December 3, 2013, we invite you to join the second annual #GivingTuesday, an opportunity for all of us to come together and redefine what it really means to give.

This day follows Black Friday and Cyber Monday. We hope you will choose ABLE and LAWO as one of your #GivingTuesday recipients! Our work is critical to thousands of low-income people who are facing legal problems that threaten the stability of their families and their homes. Donate today using our secure online donation form.

Together, we are making a dramatic and significant difference in the lives of our clients and our community. Clients like Sarah:

Not only did Sarah happily marry her husband, she even became his partner in business. Over the course of four years, the marriage fell apart and Sarah's husband began to isolate her from her friends and family. He began emotionally, verbally, and physically abusing her and eventually did everything he could to stop her from leaving -- taking her birth certificate and passport, her car keys, her wallet. At the point when her young son said to her, "If you don't leave, he is going to end up killing you," Sarah made up her mind not to let anything stand in her way of getting herself and her son away from her abuser. When Sarah reached out to a local domestic violence shelter for help, her husband drained their business and personal bank accounts, leaving her with no economic resources.

Sarah tried to prepare divorce documents on her own, but found the process difficult. The domestic violence shelter referred her to a Legal Aid attorney. Meeting with her attorney and coming up with a plan together gave Sarah the confidence she needed to move forward. Her attorney helped her obtain a Civil Protection Order and went with her to court. Although her husband repeatedly violated the protection order, it was reassuring to Sarah to have a compassionate attorney she could rely on to ensure everything was handled correctly.

Sarah now looks toward the future for herself and her son with hope and confidence.
