Heating Program: The state has announced the kick-off of its winter heating program to provide assistance to low-income and elderly Ohioans.

The Home Energy Assistance Program opened Monday and runs through March 31, according to the Department of Development. The program, administered through the Department of Development's Office of Community Assistance, provides help once per heating season to eligible households that have a service disconnection or are being threatened by one or those with less than a 10-day supply of bulk fuel.

During the 2010-2011 program, about 458,000 households were assisted, DOD said. Qualifications are dependent on household size and total gross household income for the past three or 12 months. To be eligible, the household income must be at or below 200% of the federal poverty level.
