Domestic Violence: Understanding the Problem, Empowering Change, will be a symposium designed to educate a broad range of constituencies about the problem of domestic violence.  The target audience will range from members of social and civic groups, health care practitioners and administrators, social service agencies and care providers, to legal professionals, law enforcement organizations, elected officials, the media, and even those who have been victims.

It is the intent of this program to raise the focus on domestic violence in our community over the following year. It will:

  • Train participants to be ambassadors for domestic violence awareness, education and prevention.
  • Take the domestic violence issue to the grass roots level.
  • Keep the issue in the public eye.
  • Empower all participants to make a difference in their communities, families and workplaces.

A highlight of the program will be the keynote address by Rory Kennedy, acclaimed documentary filmmaker and daughter of the late U.S. Sen. Robert F. Kennedy.  Many of her works have dealt with domestic violence issues.  She is one of the nation's most prolific independent documentary filmmakers. Her impressive body of work tackles some of our most pressing social concerns--poverty, domestic abuse, drug addiction, human rights, AIDS and mental illness--and has garnered numerous awards and been featured on HBO, A&E, MTV, Lifetime, The Oxygen Network, Court TV, TLC and PBS.

The symposium also will include a general session in the morning focusing on "The Dynamics of Domestic Violence." This session will provide an overview of the issue and a solid base to lead into a series of break-out sessions on the following topics:

  • Issues for Health Care Providers
  • Vicarious Trauma – Support for Professional Caregivers
  • Domestic Violence:  From the Abuser's Perspective
  • Domestic Violence Legal Issues Panel
  • Issues for Schools, Educators & Parents

The presentations on domestic violence-related topics and issues will feature speakers from local, state, and regional organizations and agencies.
