ABLE sues border patrol, police

As seen December 10, 2009 on Fox Toledo.

Advocates for Basic Legal Equality (ABLE) filed a class action complaint against the U.S. Border Patrol.

The lawsuit also names the police departments of Attica, Norwalk, and Plymouth.

The suit alleges officers from these agencies used racial profiling on Hispanics. It claims the officers stopped and then interrogated Hispanics regarding their immigration status.

Lawyers for ABLE claim that violates constitutional rights.

"It's imperative that we not only address this issue but we tell them to quit it," said Baldemar Velasquez, president of the Farm Labor Organizing Committee. "Stop profiling people just because they're brown or look like immigrants from the South. Start doing the serious work of doing real police work."

Velasquez added that these illegal stops have resulted in deportations and that has split up families.
