The Sandusky County Homeless Coalition will offer a public forum on homelessness in the area September 24 at 6:30 p.m. The forum will be at the Sandusky County Department of Job and Family Services, 2511 Countryside Drive.
"It's really important that community leaders are aware of this problem and take steps to address it," said Ragan Claypool, a member of the coalition and supportive services coordinator at WSOS. "The downturn in the economy has created a new set of homelessness issues for the community."
The forum will be facilitated by Tim Wasserman of the Sandusky, Ottawa, Seneca County Joint Solid Waste District. The event seeks to involve all county and municipal officials and leaders of organizations that serve the homeless. Anyone interested in homelessness issues is encouraged to attend.
Discussions will center on the differences between rural and urban homelessness, available services, state funding cuts and the impact of stock market losses.
Speakers will include staff from the Coalition on Homeless and Housing in Ohio and testimony from a homeless, or formerly homeless, person. Light refreshments will be available.
The coalition includes representatives from the First Call for Help of Sandusky County, Fremont City Council, Liberty Center Shelter, Sandusky County Department of Job and Family Services, Sandusky Metropolitan Housing Authority, WSOS HomeNet program, Sandusky County MRDD, Corporate Anointing Ministries, Catholic Charities, First Step Shelter and Legal Aid of Northwest Ohio.
